To Foul or Not to Foul
        (That is the question!)

(Dec. 2024)
Your team is ahead by 2 with 15 seconds on the clock.  Your
opponent has the ball.  Are you going to play out the defensive
possession or are you going to foul?

Obviously, you do not want to foul a shooter.

Have you practiced the unintentional intentional  foul?  In other
words, do your players know how to commit a foul  without it
   looking like it is intentional?

Do NOT get beat by their best three point shooter.   Deny
him/her.  If you are going to get beat, get beat by someone else
    than their best shooter.

If you decide to play out the possession,  you must secure the
rebound.  The old adage ... "You don't get beat on the first shot.
You get beat on the second shot."  Can happen.

Know what the team foul situation is.  Know who the poorest
free throw shooters are.   If you can leave the poorest perimeter
player open,  then foul immediately on the catch.  If your plan is
    to foul.

If you foul, and free throws are awarded, make sure you match
up on the free throw spots.  Keep their best offensive
rebounder from getting the rebound on a missed free throw.

Do you want the
Zebras to determine
the outcome?
(Just asking!)
"Basketball is the most  over coached & under taught game we have."
You as the coach need to decide whether
you are going to foul or not.  The key point
to me is does your team know what you are going to do AND have you practiced the scenario you believe in?
