212 Degrees: The Extra Degree

"Never leave your feet on .... oh, well have fun!"

I found this motivational saying many years ago but I

thought it was worth sharing. The difference in victory and defeat is often so minute. As a coach, the close

loses often haunt us the most. "IF ONLY", becomes our theme song. At some point in time, you have to make peace with yourself and realize you have done the "extra" and move on. There is an old saying that you should not let Monday ruin your Sunday. Hanging on to the past longer than you should can do that. Don't let the poor performance on Tuesday affect negatively your performance on Friday. Take it from someone who has confused the extra with more.

212 Degrees: The Extra Degree

By: Sam Parker and Mac Anderson

At 211 degrees, water is hot.

At 212 degrees, it boils.

And with boiling water, comes steam.

And steam can power a locomotive.

One extra degree makes all the difference.

And, the one extra degree of effort in business and

in life separates the good from the great!

The average margin of victory for the last 25 years in all major professional golf tournaments combined was less than three strokes.

The average margin for victory between an Olympic Gold Metal

and no metal at all is extremely small.

In the 2004 mens 800mm race, the margin of victory was 0.71 seconds.

At the Indy 500, the average margin for victory

for the past 10 years has been 1.54 seconds.

On average, the winner took home $1,278,813,

the second place prize was $621,321,

a difference of $657,492.

It’s your life.

You are responsible for the results of it.

It’s time to turn up the heat.

To get what we’ve never had, we must do

what we’ve never done. You are now aware.

You now have a target for everything you do.

The old adage that the difference between extraordinary and ordinary is the "extra". I think there is some merit to that adage. The challenge is in what the extra involves. Can you motivate yourself, the coaches around you and your players to commit to the "extra"? Something to think about as you move into the so called "off-season."
