Hit & Git

Updated: May 26, 2020

Offense sells tickets, defense wins games and rebounding wins rings.

........ Pat Riley

RELENTLESS IS AN OVER USED TERM IN ATHLETICS. I have coached hundreds of athletes and very few would I classify as being "relentless." Great not good but GREAT rebounders are relentless. They do seem to believe whether on offense or defense that every single shot is a pass to themselves. Some define good rebounders as being players who get the rebound in their area on the floor while great rebounders get rebounds outside their area.

From a defensive rebounding position, the defining concept I wanted our defensive rebounders to think there first responsibility on a shot is not to get the rebound BUT first make sure the man you are defending does NOT get the rebound. Check your game stats and see who had the most offensive rebounds by your opponent. That may very well tell you who on your team is not blocking out consistently. You need to make contact and not give up space when you block out. Hit then git! Create space is a key teaching point. You want to have enough space that you can go up at angle not straight up. Wide body hands above shoulder. Explode up and rip the rebound down with TWO hands. Chin the ball.

Offensive rebounders play a huge roll in your team's success. Every team goes through periods of scoring drought during the course of the game. Offensive rebounding can end those scoring droughts. The two points I think are most important in offensive rebounding is move into the most likely potential rebounding areas. Second, do not accept being blocked out. Don't run into the back of the man blocking you out and stick on them like they have velcro strip on their back. Remember on both offense and defense if 3 point shots are taken and missed they often result in longer rebounds. Also, if you are an offensive rebounder and you can't get two hands on the rebound, tip it and keep it alive so possibly someone else on the team can gain possession.

No hitters are rare in baseball, Unfortunately they are fairly common in basketball!
