The 24 Hour Rule

Updated: Apr 4, 2022

Once you hit the send button ..... its to late to delete.

Emotions: Good & Bad

Unfortunately, I have said things to others I wish I could now "delete" and do over, but I can't. Slowly over time I came to realize it was much better to limit my comments to others, especially when I was emotional. I needed a period

of time to calm down and not over react and allow my emotions to lead the way. At some point in my career, I decided to install what I called "The 24 Hour Rule." I did address the team in the locker room after the game, but most addresses were 3-5 minutes in length. I needed time to process my emotions. Most of the time, as I calmed down and the adrenalin levels started to level out, I realized we did not play as badly as I had thought (Unfortunately, sometimes I realized we had played even worse than I had

previously thought). If we played well, it wasn't as good as I thought either. Emotions can be unreliable. I wanted time to organize my thoughts before I met with the team the next day. I also believe players are more receptive after giving them time to recover from their competitive experience. The 24 hour rule has saved me from a great deal of embarrassment and regret. I believe the "rule" has served me well. Could it benefit you? I think the same rule can apply with social media. I have written several emails, then saved them as draft and reread them, before I either sent them or deleted. Its kind of like the old "pause for poise" concept. I don't think I have ever regretted waiting before reacting.

I would also urge parents to consider developing their own 24 hour rule. Confronting a coach right after a game, because you as a parent, feel your

child has not been treated fairly is not a good idea. Both you and the coach, are more than likely far too emotional for this to be a productive confrontation. A cooling off period will often benefit both sides.
