If you are a coach, parent, or both, you may have reached the point in your understanding that there may very well be many benefits to simply being able to "unplug."
I fully realize I grew up, and even coached much of my life, in less distracting era. We currently exist in a culture that is constantly competing for our attention. I know we are note going back to a time without computers and cell phones. The benefits of technology are large greatly out distance the negatives BUT if you as a coach/parent and do not consider the potential negative impact of technology I think you are being both naive and short sighted.
Psychologists even have created acronyms for some phobias related to technology such as the cell phone. Unfortunately, parents and other adults are not the best role models either. It's not that unusual to see a family at a restaurant using their phone while dining. This often is lead by parents. Instead of talking face to face. Is this same behavior allowed at the dinner table at home? Parents/Coaches don't attempt to restrict your children/athletes, if you are not willing
to model proper behavior yourself.
It seems almost illogical that today's youth feel more isolated and lonely than ever. Statistics suggest the young people you are teaching and coaching are more depressed, more anxious, and more suicidal than any previous generation. Seems strange to have instant communication yet many people feel more isolated than ever.
Some parents have become concerned enough to "unplug" their children by doing things such as not allowing their children to take their cell phone to bed. No computer time after a certain hour. I even read of a family that had a lock box where cell phones & laptops were stored at designated times.
I think, as educators, it is foolish not to consider how technology is affecting your student/athletes. Obviously, you need to discuss with your athletes the acceptable and unacceptable uses of computers and cell phones. Once you punch "send" it is to late to edit what you have emailed or texted. Negative consequences occur frequently when improper, derogatory, and even obscene information is shared.
Coaches you may already do these things but if not consider ....
1) Collect cell phones as players enter the locker room for practice.
2) Have players turn off their cell phones while on the bus during away games. At least 15
minutes prior to your arrival at the away site?
3) Communicate what is acceptable and what is not acceptable social media content &
