WHETHER YOUR "IN" OR "OUT"

March is my favorite time of the year. The high school season is winding down. By now some of you are deep into the playoffs or, unfortunately, you may be doing inventory, collecting gear, and focusing on all of the tasks required to wrap up another season.

If you are still playing, think about a tweak or two you may want to add. Thing about special situations. Reviewthings like how to stop the clock with the intentional unintentional foul. C hanging or adding a blob or slob. Last second offensive & defensive sets. Think about doing something you have not done all season. Resist the temptation of adding more than your players can be expected to execute in pressure situations. Think about how you may need to communicate in a strange gym & with a loud crowd. Are you going to shorten your bench? Do your players know what role(s) they may be asked to play? Do your players know & understand
the strengths & weaknesses of your next opponent? Maybe most importantly, do they understand their own strengths & weaknesses?

If & when you are eliminated, think about what's next. Are you going to have individual season end evaluations? We used a written evaluation form that we went over during our season ending evaluation. Consider when, where, & how you are going to conduct your player evaluation sessions. It may be a good idea to have an assistant coach sit in the session(s) with you. I believe this is a good time to discuss the future of each returning player & attempt to share the role you see for each player in the season ahead. Are you going to have your own summer camp? Are you going to have summer practices? Are you going to have "open" gym
sessions? Are you going to evaluate your staff? Are you going to have your staff evaluate you? Are you looking to adjust your game schedule for next season? Do you have a player development program? If a player comes to you & asks for some drills they can work on their game do you have any specifically for each player? The list of things to do goes on and on.

Regardless of whether your team is still playing or not, find a time a place, to decompress. If necessary, sit down with some important people in your life who will tell you the truth about your coaching strengths & areas you can improve on. If your team is still playing, enjoy the ride as long as it lasts. If your team's season is over, do what you need to get done to wrap up the season. Reflect, regroup, and RELAX!
